Drew Doughty goes Goldberg on Shane Doan.No. 1 Star: Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles KingsKopitar's game-tying goal was an absolute beauty, as he kicked Dustin Brown's pass to his stick then undressed Mike Smith with a sick deke. He also had a game-high 4 shots and finished the night a plus-2 in the Kings' 2-1 Game 3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. No. 2 Star: Dwight King, Los Angeles KingsThe winger dealt the fatal blow Thursday night, scoring the game-winning goal just under two minutes into the third. After curling away from the wall into the massive patch of open ice at the right circle, King beat Mike Smith with a wrister on his only shot of the game.No. 3 Star: Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings25:38 for the Kings' blueline leader, a plus-1, 2 shots, and the awesome photo at the top of this post. Doughty is quietly controlling games for the Kings and he deserves more credit than he's getting.Honourable mention: Daymond Langkow scores the Coyotes' lone goal, and Derek Morris picked up the assist ... Jonathan Quick may have looked shaky on the Langkow goal, but he certainly didn't anywhere else ... Antoine Vermette went 10-for-13 in the faceoff circle ... Shane Doan had 11 hits, and I'm pretty sure all of them were on Dustin Brown.Conn Smythe Watch: 1. Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings; 2. Dustin Brown, Los Angeles Kings; 3. Brad Richards, New York Rangers; 4. Ilya Kovalchuk, New Jersey Devils; 5. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers; 6. Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings; 7. Mike Smith, Phoenix Coyotes; 8. Mike Richards, Los Angeles Kings; 9. David Clarkson, New Jersey Devils; 10. Jeff Carter, Los Angeles KingsDishonourable mention: Dustin Brown dives a lot.
Make it eight. No, not Canadian teams -- consecutive wins for the Los Angeles Kings, who took a 3-0 series lead over the Phoenix Coyotes in the Western Conference Finals with a 2-1 Game 3 victory. While the result was the same, Thursday night's script was slightly different, at least for the first 21 minutes. The Coyotes came out stronger in Los Angeles, outshooting the Kings 11-8 in the first period and showing that they wouldn't go easily.A minute into the second period, they finally beat Jonathan Quick, as Daymond Langkow slipped a shot through the LA netminder's pads on a partial breakaway to give the Coyotes their first lead of the series. But only 127 seconds later, the Kings answered. Dustin Brown found Anze Kopitar streaking in behind the Phoenix defence, and Kopitar made two elite plays to tie the score: first, he deftly accepted the pass by kicking it from his skate to his stick, and second, he opened up Mike Smith up with a first-class deke, slipping the puck through the five-hole.And then the Kings kept answering. The rest of Game 3 looked mighty familiar to anybody that had watched the two games prior, as the Kings outshot the Coyotes by a 2-1 margin over the final 40 minutes (20-8), swarming and overmatching Phoenix at every turn.Eventually, inevitably, Game 3 took on the look Game 2, with the Coyotes looking undisciplined, taking four minor penalties in the final frame, and disorganized, giving Dwight King untold space in the slot, a no-no under Dave Tippett. King buried them, taking the puck off the wall during a delayed penalty, finding a wide open patch of ice inside the circle, and burying the shot. The penalties stalled any hopes the Coyotes had of gaining momentum and tying the game, as they put just four shots on Jonathan Quick in the 3rd period. Now, the Coyotes find themselves on the brink of elimination, and the Kings find themselves just one game from the Stanley Cup Final, with history on their side. Only three teams have ever come back from down three games: the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1975 New York Islanders, and the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers. But you probably remember this information from when it was trotted out during the Kings' 3-0 leads in rounds 1 and 2, and if those series were any indication, this one will be over soon.

5 Vote(s)

Following a dogged pursuit and intense negotiations, former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has been put in charge of every professional club in Europe. Even before stepping down from his job with Barcelona at the end of the season, Guardiola has been linked named as the prime target by a number of Europe's top clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Milan. But instead of choosing just one position, Guardiola has decided to accept all of them."After winning everything with one team, I decided that winning everything with all of the teams would be my next challenge," said Guardiola at a press conference broadcast across the continent. "Since every club looking for a new manager -- and even those that weren't -- had me at the top of their wish lists, I felt that I couldn't let any of them down, so I accept all of the jobs. I hope the managers put out of work by this understand, but, at least now they can pursue a new career where they aren't constantly criticized for not being me."Guardiola has decided to maintain a central command station high in the clouds above Europe, where he can keep an eye on his thousands of players and hundreds of clubs. This will also allow him to remain within earshot of the prayers from the many club owners who idolize him. Several executives offered to have a custom aircraft built to facilitate his wishes, but Guardiola declined, citing his ability to levitate."I'm not exactly sure how this will work," Guardiola admitted. "But FIFA will probably have to allow matches to be played with two balls next season."When reached for comment, Jose Mourinho, the one manager who retained his job in the Guardiola takeover, said, "Bring it on, Pepperpot."

12 Vote(s)

The Phoenix Coyotes lost Game 3 of the Western Conference Final to the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1, taking four minor penalties in the third period to undermine any rally. Two of the calls upset Coach Dave Tippett: a retaliatory cross-check by Oliver Ekman-Larsson on Dustin Brown and a Radim Vrbata stick-slash on Anze Kopitar very late in the third. After Game 3, Tippett had more than a few words about the officiating and embellishment in today's NHL:The money quote from Tippett:"The game is turning a little dishonest. And it's embellishment by players. When it's done well, it's very hard for the referees, because if you fall down near the boards, or you drop your stick or you throw your head back, you're putting the referee in a very tough situation."Tippett said both the Kings and Coyotes benefited from embellishment in the series, and that the current "dishonest" streak in the NHL mandates that "if everybody else is going to do it, you gotta do it too."So at least Tippett isn't pretending that the Coyotes are without sin when casting stones at the Kings. Because any coach with Mike Smith between the pipes is in no position to bemoan the embellishment of others.

16 Vote(s)

The Miami Heat were really, really bad in their Game 3 against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night, losing 94-75 and looking overmatched for most of the 48 minutes. Given the common narratives and the form of this loss, it's likely that LeBron James will get a lot of criticism.Oddly enough, one of the opposing players thought LeBron choked while the game was still going on. Near the end of the third quarter, Pacers wing Danny Granger grabbed James's jersey on a breakaway and caused a little tiff between the two stars. Granger was given a technical foul, and LeBron missed the free throw. That made Indiana benchwarmer Lance Stephenson perform a Reggie Miller-esque choking gesture. It was in poor taste, but it also stood in for many NBA fans' reactions to the game.Check out the video above to take a look (or this GIF or this screengrab via SB Nation). After the jump, look at the Granger foul that led to this incident, as well as some thoughts on whether or not James actually joked in this game. What's curious about Stephenson's gesture is that LeBron and Mario Chalmers were the only two members of the Heat who played well in the game. James wasn't at his absolute best, but his line of 22 points (10-of-22 shooting), seven rebounds, and three assists at least gave Miami a chance. As our Kelly Dwyer explains, the real problems were that Dwyane Wade had one of the worst games of his career and that Indiana completely dominated the paint. A fair assessment of what went wrong should barely deal with LeBron at all.The Heat might be able to bounce back in Game 4 on Saturday, but it looks increasingly difficult without Chris Bosh to help out inside. LeBron's much-discussed issues at the end of games mean very little when his team isn't close in the final minutes.(Stephenson video via EOB)

12 Vote(s)

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers have the length, athleticism and defensive pedigree to create a rough night for even the most prolific of scorers, but nobody could have expected this. The Pacers capably defended their home court in Thursday night's 94-75 Game 3 victory over the Miami Heat, holding Dwyane Wade to a horrific 2-for-13 night and LeBron James to a 3-for-9 mark from the floor in the second half. Miami's frustration was typified by a third-quarter jawing match between Wade and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, fueled by both Wade's sluggish play and a 52-29 run that helped the Pacers pull away in the second and third quarters. The Game 3 performance was a low point for Wade, who has missed 40 of his 58 shots in the series. Worse, the 2006 Finals MVP looked both hesitant and frustrated, seemingly trying to shoot himself out of the slump. And his Miami-styled brand of insouciance was less than appealing. Wade said afterward he "was not trying to force it out there," but we disagree. He finished with five points in what was obviously the worst playoff game of his eight-year career.[Also: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James on Forbes list of most powerful celebrities]Indiana put Wade in this bad place. Not only do the Pacers feature a litany of long wing defenders bent on chasing him around his various screens, but the presence of All-Star center Roy Hibbert loomed large in the win. Hibbert scored 19 points for Indiana, taking advantage of that limited Miami front line, but his biggest impact came on the defensive end as his length helped chase Wade and James into mid-range looks that they could not connect on. Hibbert added 18 rebounds and five blocks, and his individual defense in one significant fourth-quarter stretch almost singularly quelled Miami's last chance at a comeback.Pacers coach Frank Vogel was pleased, calling Hibbert's performance the "best game I've ever seen him play," while still refusing to fully credit his team for shutting down Wade. "Paul George," Vogel said, "is one of the top five most versatile defenders in the NBA. But you can't give Paul all the credit. Wade had an off night."Did he ever. Not only did Wade's frustrations take the Heat out of their offense, as he attempted to fire his way back into his typical box-score prominence, but his failure to get back on defense and (at times) go over the top on Indiana's screens drew Spoelstra's ire.Not that their third-quarter "conversation" was troubling the Heat coach."That happens," Spoelstra said. "You have no idea how often things like that happen. That was during a very emotional part of the game when we were getting our butt kicked."Dwyane and I," Spoelstra reminded, "have been together a very long time. Very long time."[Also: Lakers' Kobe Bryant fails in crunch time against the Thunder]Spoelstra also refused to blame Wade's woes on any possible injury, and pointed to the fact that just about every active NBA player is banged up as they work through the second round of the play

13 Vote(s)

Not only has FC Dallas' visit to Columbus Crew provided us with a textbook throat-kick DTotD, but also a fine example of assistant referee abuse. FC Dallas' Brek Shea was unhappy with the linesman for calling a foul on him, and expressed his disappointment via the medium of volleying the ball directly at the official's stomach. He escaped without a yellow card for the incident - as did the Crew's Tony Tchani for what looked like an obvious flop - but the U.S. national team midfielder wasreprimanded by MLS on Thursday with a three-match suspension and an undisclosed fine.It seems like a reasonably strong punishment, but at least half of the fine has to be for that haircut.

19 Vote(s)

In Steve Orsini's tenure as SMU athletic director, he revitalized the football program by hiring June Jones, he orchestrated the school's move to the Big East and he landed Larry Brown after an admittedly meandering, overambitious basketball coaching search.Surely that success earned him a contract extension, right? Uh, apparently not.In a move that apparently surprised even those within the athletic department, SMU announced Thursday afternoon that it has fired Orsini with three years left on his contract. The Dallas Morning News reported Thursday evening that a growing clash between Orsini and school president R. Gerald Turner led to the termination."After several discussions over the last few weeks it became apparent to me that it was necessary to make this change," Turner said in a statement released by the school. "While we both are committed to the support of our student-athletes and coaches, a unified effort is required for future progress."The most bizarre aspect of Orsini's firing is the timing of it.If Turner had lost faith in Orsini's ability to lead SMU's athletic department, why let him lead the school's search for a new basketball coach that culminated in the hiring of Brown less than a month ago? Orsini did bungle the search by going after unattainable candidates like Marquette's Buzz Williams and Harvard's Tommy Amaker, yet he also salvaged things by making a splashy, albeit controversial hire.Ultimately, it appears the falling out between Turner and Orsini must have escalated in the past few weeks. We may never know what happened between the two administrators, but chances are it wasn't an amicable parting.

5 Vote(s)

Back by popular demand, here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished."I'm the highest paid one!" tweets Hal Gill along with this photo, showing he has an amazing sense of humour.Western Conference Final Game 3 Preview: Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings, 9 p.m. ET.This series got a little silly towards the end of Game 2, and it runs the risk getting even sillier if the Phoenix Coyotes can't slow down the Kings in Game 3 Thursday night. The list of things they need to do better is long, but it's easily abridged into one word: everything. They were soundly outplayed in Phoenix, and now they face the daunting task of reversing the polarity of this series at the Staples Center without Adrian Aucoin, who missed the first 2 games of this series with an injury but was expected back for Game 3, and Martin Hanzal, who's been suspended one game for running Dustin Brown into the boards. Getting the first goal will be critical: if Phoenix falls behind early in this one, it could deflate them ever further, and this series could very well be over.Evening Reading• Listen to today's Marek Vs.
